Native Plants are growing all around you but have you noticed them?
Orono is fortunate to have a number of hiking trails and scenic rural roads sporting a variety of plant life. As the weather improves allowing us to enjoy the fresh air and perhaps conversation with a socially distanced friend, it also fun to identify some of the pretty flowers.
Here are my picks for the four prettiest spring native plants.
The Red Trillium - it blooms slightly earlier than the white trillium and is every bit as beautiful.
The Trout Lily - with its delicate bell-shaped yellow flower, it can be found at the side of the road or in deciduous woods.
The Marsh Marigold - its beautiful yellow flowers and foliage form a large bouquet shape and are found in very wet to swampy soil.
Bloodroot - grows in clumps pretty well everywhere including the sides of the road and in tree shaded areas and has the most delicate white petals.
These plants are all native to our area which means that they grew here prior to European contact.
So the next time you are hiking in our wooded areas or meandering down one of our country roads, remember these photos and that all of these favourites are native to our little piece of the world.
